An American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a designated wine grape-growing region in the United States distinguishable by geographic features that qualify. John Alger of Alger Vineyards shared the process that began early on of getting the Manton region identified as an AVA. With no geological surveys of the mountain and no map, a survey was conducted, one which required rain, frost and snow measurements be taken daily. The “Cohasset soil” was found to be identical to that of the soils of France, and the climate of Calistoga, CA. Indian Peak Vineyards

Fred & Donna Boots -Visit this family winery in Manton and at their offsite tasting room in Graeagle. They produce Cabernet Sauvingon, Merlot, Abstract Red (Blend of Syrah and Zin), Port, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc at 2,200ft elevation on the western slope of Mt. Lassen. Soils are red volcanic and well drained.
