Tank On That Scary Holiday

These holidays you humans celebrate are getting to be a little much, don’t you think? Kids get dozens of presents at Christmas; dogs get one. What’s up with that? The whole holiday is geared for people, but everyone knows what a big deal dogs are nowadays. Seems we might at least get a spot at the table. Why would ANYone want to celebrate without their best friends? It makes no sense. We look out for you guys 24/7. Am I right?

The worst holiday of all is that New Year’s Eve thing. Really?! Who came up with that one? Again, it’s the humans who get to have all the fun while we sit and worry all night. That’s right, we know what’s coming. Some people start in the afternoon but everybody seems to want to make loud, shuddering booms that make us four-legged friends run right under the bed.

One New Year’s Eve we had a party in our front yard. Then here come the awful sounds from all over town. I just started running as fast as I could but I couldn’t escape them. They were everywhere. My eyes were twitching, I had real tears! My heart was racing and my patience was at its end. I ran, I barked and I soon realized I was lost, and lost I was, for quite some time. It was a long, lonely night. I laid and cried most of the time.

Finally when I thought I had lost my dad forever, I heard his voice yelling for me in the distance. I jumped up off the couch and the nice lady who’d let me in, let me out. I screamed for my dad. I heard the car come to a halt as I ran for refuge to my mom and dad. I jumped in that car so fast. “I’ll never run away again” I promised. “Never!”

Now when New Years comes around, I can usually talk my dad into staying home and watching sports reruns. They always make me happy. Oh, I still hate the terrible sounds of New ear’s Eve, but I lay right in my dad’s lap so I know I can’t lose him. If he gets up, so do I.

Don’t know about you, but I’m ready for one of those  holidays that come with a picnic and playing in the lake, you know, picking up all the food kids drop and fetching the ball, stuff like that. Those ones are my favorite holidays.
