4th of July Cake – Super Easy!
Making this flag cake has been a tradition in our family for decades and it always ends up being easy, fun to decorate, and delicious.
Makes a large cake, assemble on a cookie sheet: if desired cover cookie sheet with parchment or wax paper.
You will need::
3 rectangular loaf cakes (found wrapped in the bakery section of the grocery store.).
One large tub of cool whip® or a quart of whipping cream, beat until stiff peaks form.
Cut each cake into 3 (fairly even) horizontal layers, carefully. with a serrated knife. Once cut, flip the three stacks upside down.
2-3 baskets of strawberries, rinsed and sliced
1 large basket of rinsed blueberries for the ‘flag’ cake’s star area
1 giant tub of cool whip or whip 1 quart of real whipping cream, whipped to stiff peaks.
Directions:
Kids will love helping decorate. Lay bottom layer of the three cakes (now flipped to be on top) into a flag shape in the center of cookie sheet; lay two of the slices horizontally, tightly next to each other. Lay the third one vertically, tightly next to the other two to form a rectangle shape for building the flag. Cover with a short layer of whipped cream or cool whip. sprinkle sliced strawberries sparsely and add the second layer of cakes in the same manner as first. Again, place a short layer of whipped cream or cool whip® and a few more strawberries on the second layer. Following the same routine, assemble cakes to make the top layer; spread a thicker layer of whipped cream for the top of the cake and do not sprinkle strawberries. Instead, Frost” the sides of cake with whipped topping; Then draw a flag with berries, using the blueberries in the top left corner resembling stars. Then add the stripes. Don’t worry about getting the right number of Stars and Stripes on the cake. First, designate where the stars go and place them in the top left corner. Then make the stripes by lining up sliced strawberries to make each stripe, as wide as you like, leaving white space between stripes.
