RICH HISTORY    The Walker Mansion was originally built for the Walker family, founders of Westwood and the Red River Lumber Company, who arrived in 1913. They literally carved the town out of the forest, setting up thier mills and an industry that would carry their “Paul Bunyan Pine” to customers across the country.    Just next door stands a 25-foot redwood carving of Paul Bunyan, a character with close ties to Westwood. Tales of the legendary giant were told by William Laughead, cousin to the Walkers and marketing guru for their company. Next to Paul stands Babe the Blue Ox, a character created in Westwood. With shipments of lumber, storybooks were delivered in what can be traced as the first printed stories and pictures of Paul Bunyan. The books brought the legend to national fame and well promoted the company’s timber products. The giant mill once stood nearby, where the train still passes through. A museum is open seasonally just a few doors down the street.   ENJOYING THE AREA    Whether you come for the beauty and  adventure of Lake Almanor or a visit to Mt.
